Autonomous Vehicles are the Future—But What are They?

These high-tech cars of the future are not a product in and of themselves. They are comprised of two things: the virtual driver system, and the autonomous vehicle platform, a smarter version of the car itself.

According to Chris Brewer, Chief Program Engineer for Ford Autonomous Vehicle Development, the new Fusion Hybrid focuses on the development and testing of the car’s platform and virtual driver system, an element that embodies a big leap in sensing and computing power.

What Pieces Make Up Ford’s Virtual Driver System Puzzle?

To replicate a real-life human driver with confidence and reliability, Ford employed:

  • LiDAR sensors, cameras and radar
  • Systems for path planning and localization
  • Machine learning and computer vision
  • Comprehensive 3D maps
  • Computational and electronics horsepower to power the car
