How to Smoke Your Tires Like a Drag Racer with Vaughn Gittin Jr.

To show off the new 2018 Ford Mustang, Formula Drift Champion Vaughn Gittin Jr. recruited unsuspecting pedestrians, and brought them to the Irwindale Speedway in California to burn some rubber.

Peeling out of a parking lot with plumes of billowing smoke behind is one way movies like to mark a character as a renegade with cool-points to spare. That innate "cool" feeling we have about tire burnout is a result of a few facts about it:

  • You need a pretty powerful rear-wheel drive car to do it, so you're already driving an awesome sports car
  • It takes driving skill to execute correctly
  • Burnout is routinely done to warm up tires before drag races, so there's an association with pro motorsports
  • It's loud and obnoxious, can be dangerous, and wears down your tires, so you've got that devil-may-care, rebel-without-a-cause attitude

With the 2018 Mustang, however, anybody can smoke their tires, even without years of racing experience, as Vaughn Gittin Jr. demonstrates. Every new Mustang comes standard with electronic line-lock, which makes warming up your tires as easy as pressing a button, and hitting the throttle.
